14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868. The amendment overruled the Dred Scott v. Sandford case that stated African Americans as property, not citizens. After the amendment was passed African Americans could become citizens of the United States. As citizens, they are entitled to every right a white man is entitled to under the Constitution.
