black panthers founded
The Black Panther Party was originally called the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. This African American revolutionary socialist organization was in full throttle from 1966 to 1982. It played a big role in the "Black Power" movement in the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s. This organization was founded in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. Originally, the Black Panthers were founded to protect African American neighborhoods from the police brutality. However, the group quickly evolved and expanded their uses to the point were important members sometimes disagreed with the decisions. The Black Panthers were involved in some violent occurrences, like the shooting of John Frey, an Oakland police officer, and Panther Bobby Hutton being killed. The Black Panthers dissolved in 1982, but they did inspire a new group to be founded: the New Black Panther Party in Dallas, Texas in 1989.
