"bull" connor and birmingham alabama
Theophilus Eugene "Bull" Connor was the Commissioner of Public Safety in Birmingham, Alabama. The time when he was the Commissioner of Public Safety was the same time of the Civil Rights Movement. He was not a member of the KKK, but he did defend people who were part of the Klan whenever there was racial violence or bombing. He ordered police to stay away from the KKK in 1961 while they were attacking civil rights activists. The citizens tried to change the city's government in 1962 in an attempt to get Connor out of office. However, with the help of two other city commissioners, Bull Connor changed their government back and stayed in office until May of 1963. He ended up dying on March 10, 1973. Bull Connor was another white supremacist during the Civil Rights Era, and was one of many different people trying to stop the blacks from getting desegregation. However, this shows how powerful the Civil Rights Movement, since obviously these white supremacists did not win in the end.
