The Montgomery Bus boycott
Before the Montgomery Bus Boycott African Americans were forced to sit in designated areas on a public bus. The Boycott began when a seamstress named Rosa Parks paid her bus fare and sat in the white only sitting area. Once a white man entered the bus he demanded that she move to the back where she belongs. Parks denied this request and stayed in her seat. After she was arrested blacks in Alabama began doing the same and sitting in the white designated seating area. Soon blacks gained the ability to sit where they please on a public bus.
