little rock nine
A group of African American students who attended Little Rock Central High School in 1957 are widely known now as the Little Rock Nine. They were escorted every day to and from school by troops of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. This time was a very early stage where some schools became racially integrated to let blacks have equal education as whites. Whites threw riots and taunted the blacks as they entered the schools. These are just a few things that the Little Rock Nine went through every single day going to school. These nine black students were a large cause of blacks receiving equal education rights as whites. They also gave blacks more bravery in attending these types of schools where previously, whites were only allowed. The Little Rock Nine consisted of: Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Dr. Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls Lanier, Minnijean Brown Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed-Wair, and Melba Pattillo Beals.
